I'm a new student, how do I start?

New students should contact us at chicagokendo@hotmail.com and we will provide you with the necessary information to get started.

When and where is practice?

Practice is every Tuesday and Friday each week, unless otherwise noted on the calendar.

The dojo opens at 7:30 p.m., beginners should arrive at that time, with practice starting at 8:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m.

Practice is located in Andersonville at St. Gregory Gymnasium.

What do I wear?

For beginners just starting, you will need to purchase a shinai (bamboo sword); no uniform or special attire is necessary—comfortable exercise clothes (sweatpants, t-shirt/sweatshirt) are fine. Once a beginner has participated in an appropriate number of practices, you will be given permission to purchase and wear the keikogi (uniform top), hakama (uniform bottom), and then after some time eventually bogu (protective armor).

What usually happens during
a practice?

Generally, Tuesday and Friday practice is organized as follows:

7:30pm - Beginners should arrive
8:00pm - Warm-up
8:30pm - Beginner and kata practice
9:00pm - Fundamental "uchi-komi" practice
9:30pm - Ji-geiko
